Louisiana has many top ranked schools throughout the state. In fact, six Louisiana schools were named 2018 Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.
The state has focused on an academic plan which has seen an increase in student performance. The increase has shown that more students in Louisiana schools are graduating with and mastering more skills and credentials needed for college or the workplace through Louisiana’s Academic Plan. The class of 2017 had a total of 48 percent of students who earned early college credit or statewide career credentials. The plan focuses on access to quality early childhood education, academic alignment in every school and classroom, teacher and leader preparation, pathways to college or a career and supporting struggling schools.
The state has also modified its accountability system which holds tougher standards than before. The student performance metrics which include state test results, graduation rates and college credit attainment has been the standard accountability system in the past. The revised system not only includes the student performance metrics but also evaluates schools based on the progress of the students over the course of the school year. It also includes the “Student Progress Index” where students progress and growth no matter where they began will be accounted. The new information will be a tool that Louisiana educators can us to evaluate their school academic plan.
“K-12 schools are beginning to step up to significantly higher expectations,” Education Superintendent John White stated.
Plaquemines Parish School District received a B letter grade and surpassed the state overall by 8 points. Belle Chasse High School, Belle Chasse Primary School and South Plaquemines High School all received a letter grade A.
